White, who will become the seventh chancellor of The California State University system come December, understands the value of a public education. Born in Argentina, he immigrated to California and is a first-generation college student who has matriculated within every college system in the state. Currently chancellor of the University of California, Riverside, White was previously president of the University of Idaho. He is succeeding Charles B. Reed, who is retiring from the 23-campus system after 14 years. … The 112-campus California Community Colleges system also has a new chancellor, Brice Harris. He replaces Jack Scott, who retired in September. … Charles Gradowski is now vice president of fiscal affairs at Lincoln University (Pa.), a role he began on August 7. … Tracy A. Harris, formerly enrollment services dean at Prince George’s Community College (Md.), is vice president and dean of The College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown Campus. … Princeton’s first female president, Shirley Tilghman, will retire at Timothy P. White the end of the academic year. … Central Michigan University Executive Vice President/Provost Gary Shapiro will step down from his position at the end of this academic year. … Javier Miyares stepped into the role of president at the University of Maryland University College on October 1. He had been serving as acting president of UMUC since February, after former president Susan Aldridge resigned. … Francis Raftery, president of the College of Saint Elizabeth (N.J.) for the past 16 years and an employee there for 38 years, will retire in June 2013. … After serving as interim president of the University of Nevada, Reno since the death of former president Milton Glick in April 2011, Marc Johnson was inaugurated as the university’s 16th president on September 21. —K.D. Weekend Visits Take Wing As any admissions counselor knows, a campus visit can make the difference between a student enrolling or not. While most families probably do road trips when they go on college visits, some do take to the air. Campus leaders at Hope College (Mich.) are easing the financial burden for those outside of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin by reimbursing half (up to $300) of the cost of an airline ticket for out-of-state students. While parents are welcome to tag along, the funding is just for Junior. Costs of meals and lodging are covered as well, and students within driving range also receive that perk. “Fly-in” weekends are held in the spring and fall in coordination with planned visit days, explains Barb Grooters, office specialist in the Admissions Office. A special event is held on Thursday nights for long-distance visitors, since most of the activities take place on Friday. “We take the students on a bus to Lake Michigan and the reaction of those who have never seen one of the Great Lakes is amazing,” Grooters shares. “Often they can’t believe they are not at an ocean.” The funding is available to the first 40 students to register who are already applied seniors.
