Behind the news Instilling Champions of Character Even before Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was indicted on child molestation charges and Penn State executives and athletic leaders stood accused of a massive cover-up, the staggering toll for the university, the victims, and their families was beginning. The financial expense of the Sandusky Scandal has run up a reported $17 million in fees, plus a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanction and fine of $60 million. Enter the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics. Uniquely, the association’s Champions of Character program is now prepping the next generation of collegiate athletes and coaches. What we learned from the association’s CEO Jim Carr is that it embraces core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Instilling values of character helps student athletes, and those coaches and mentors associated with their development, to make good choices. These core values go well beyond the locker room to reach daily decisions of athletes and their coaches, on and off the field of play. With over a decade of experience, the Association’s Champions of Character program intentionally creates a culture where student athletes, athletic directors, coaches, and administrators are committed to the true spirit of collegiate competition. By leveling the ethical playing field, mentoring student athlete success, and promoting fair play, Future Shock U the Association has developed a pool of future leaders—the kind of leaders who become role models for sustainable scholarship support. Roosevelt University (Ill.) Sports Management Professor Jonathan Reinsdorf tells us that student athletes who never make it to the pros are more likely to complete their degree program if they have a hands-on sports ethics and service learning experience in their career field of choice (sports marketing, sports communications, athletic facility operations, or sports hospitality, to name a few). So, if the Penn State case taught us a single lesson—it is that intercollegiate programs should build champions of character and not just winners of athletic championships. We all agree that higher education’s top officials must keep an eye on the bottom line and protect an institution’s respected heritage. In the end, we learned from Penn State that character, integrity, and leadership matter more than false pride, money, ranking, and NCAA Division I standing. —James Martin and James E. Driver. … Delaware Valley College (Pa.) is also adding classroom space, within a new 38,000-square-foot, $15 million life sciences building. The facility will include an auditorium, an atrium, laboratories, a conference room, and classrooms. Classrooms and laboratories will be used by multiple departments. A glass-enclosed staircase will allow for views of the historic gates of the campus. On the grounds will be a natural amphitheater for concerts, events, and gatherings. Completion, which can be tracked via a livestream posted on the college’s website, is expected in time for the building to be used in spring 2014. The design firm is Kimmel Bogrette, and IMC Construction is the general contractor. … Beacon College (Fla.) has broken ground on a $2.1 million administration and classroom building in downtown Leesburg across from the public library. The former administration building was torn down in 2011. The facility, which is needed due to increasing student enrollment, will be the first new academic building in Beacon’s 23-year history. Involved in the project, which is scheduled for a spring 2013 completion, is Blaise/Fiebach Architecture and Evergreen Construction Management. —Melissa Ezarik At San Diego State University, construction is under way on a 100,000-square-foot renovation and 30,000-square-foot expansion of the Storm and Nasatir building complex, built in 1957. The project will allow the buildings to meet current health and safety code standards as well as correct deferred maintenance issues and improve water and energy conservation. It is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. When completed in January 2015, the $73 million project will include new and upgraded classroom technologies, academic and research labs, and faculty offices for the College of Arts and Letters.
