Winds of Change - Spring 2017 - 27

with a concentration in
management information
systems, Largo was hired as a
network element specialist by
the communications giant.
That opportunity came his way
through the AISES network. "I
have been a member since I
was in high school," he recalls.
"After I graduated with my
bachelor's degree, I was
contacted by an AT&T
representative who had seen
my resume in the AISES
membership database. And
here I am, all these years later."
In his role at AT&T, he
was responsible for network
support for the voice and data
signaling service over the
company's network, and in
particular, the Message Waiting
Indicator. "It gave me the
opportunity to travel and gain
experience while learning
about the AT&T wireless

network infrastructure," Largo
explains. "The company was
expanding its network, and I
was able to install new servers
in support of that effort."
His career has also expanded, and he currently enjoys
developing and evaluating
network performance criteria
and measurement methods for
network elements. In addition,
he performs analysis of the
short- and long-term capacity
needs for wireless and wireline
infrastructure in the AT&T
cloud services. "I'm currently in
a good area working on the
AT&T cloud services network
and would like to stay involved
in the current technology," he
says. "But I do have aspirations
of transitioning into upper
management."
Largo's satisfaction with his
job is amplified by his
company's commitment to

diversity and, in particular,
Native Americans. AT&T's
involvement with the Native
community is strong, according to Largo. "Their support
focuses on four key areas,
which are employees, customers, suppliers, and communities," he says.
Together with AT&T, the
employee resource group for
Natives - the Inter-Tribal
Council of AT&T Employees
- supports the employees,
local communities, and
organizations such as AISES
and the National Center for
American Indian Enterprise
Development. Largo has served
as president of AT&T's regional
Native employee resource
group, the Bear Claw Council,
which leads a variety of events
and seminars.
AT&T also offers a tribal
member discount phone

program, provides various
scholarships, and contributes
to myriad institutions and
organizations, including the
American Indian College
Fund; the Native American
Political Leadership Program
through George Washington
University; the Early Literacy
Program; Seminole State
College's President's Leadership Class, a two-year
scholarship program; Murrow
Indian Children's Home in
Oklahoma; and the Oyate
Networking Project on the
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
in South Dakota.
"AT&T is definitely a role
model when it comes to
supporting Native employees
and organizations as well as
other historically underrepresented groups," says Largo.
"They do so much."
