Winds of Change - Spring 2017 - 2

Welcome
AISES
FROM

Welcome to the Spring 2017 issue of Winds of
Change! This is an especially exciting year for
AISES because it marks our 40th anniversary
as an organization. We'll be celebrating that
milestone all year long, starting with
the article on page 30 that helps us
both remember our beginnings and
look toward the future.
A big part of our celebration will
take place when we are all together at
the 2017 National Conference. Our wonderful AISES staff is
planning some special anniversary celebrations for that annual event, coming up in
Denver, Sept. 21-23. Our conferences have been logging record-breaking attendance,
so be sure to register early and make your plans!
Also in this issue is our annual look at the Top 50 Workplaces for Native American
STEM professionals. These are corporations, organizations, and government
agencies where you can count on developing your career in an environment that is
welcoming, supportive, and open to your contributions. (We are planning a
parallel look at top workplaces among tribal enterprises for the Fall 2017 issue of
Winds of Change.)
Our Top 50 article also includes a close-up look at staff members at several of
these companies, like Gary Burnette of IBM, who share why they are enthusiastic
about where they work. For Burnette, IBM has kept him intrigued with new
challenges for three decades and counting. "You might think some guy who's been at
IBM for 30 years has nothing left to learn, right?" he says. "No way."
And, as always, this issue brings you news of AISES and our members and
chapters in AISES Notebook on page 6, profiles of members in AISES People on
page 10, and ideas for opportunities in academia, government, tribal enterprises,
and the corporate world in Career Builder on page 36.
Looking at all we have going on today at AISES, especially from the perspective
of 40 years on, I can only marvel at all the people who have been passionate about
our collective mission and contributed wholeheartedly. As Jerry Elliott High Eagle,
one of our founding members, says in our anniversary remembrance article, "AISES
is not just an organization of like-minded people. . . . It is an opportunity to have a
new life adventure to explore and discover. In 1977, we planted the seed - you
made it grow!"
And you - and all of us - will be working hard to keep it growing in the next
40 years.
