Coastal Traveler - Fall 2007 - (Page 62) coastaltraveler Fairfax: Gateway to West Marin By Meghan Gilliss Welcome to Fairfax, home to all things sustainable, tye-dyed, and psychedelic. Jerry Garcia used to live up the road, and the memory of his presence still fuels the music scene. Between the town’s four venues (The BookBeat Café; Peri’s Silver Dollar; 19 Broadway Nite Club; Café Amsterdam), there’s live music every night, drawing the locals into town from their hill-tucked homes. All within 200 yards, you can have your hair cut by the man who trimmed and colored Janis Joplins’s wild mane at A Touch of Class, have your tarot cards read at the Circle Center, and buy an organic treat for your dog at For Paws. Fairfax is also the birthplace of mountain biking. At Fairfax Cyclery you can get a mountain bike built to suit your skill level, and take it out to Repack Road where the sport of mountain biking was born. You might even pedal by Gary Fisher, Christopher Lang, Joe Breeze or Chris Kelley – pioneers of the sport who still live in the area. Spend the rest of the day dipping in and out of shops: try FatKat’s Surf Shop or Revolution 9 or the multicultural and eclectic Culture Shock, with everything from skirts to finger puppets from around the world. Or simply sink into a purple velvet seat in front one of the four screens at Fairfax Theatre. After the movie, dash up the street for some ice cream at the Fairfax Scoop. For a more literary thrill, hole up in the BookBeat Café on Bolinas Road. In good weather, a hike or a bike ride is a must. Mt. Tamarancho, has one of the only legal single-track trails. Start at Deer Park (from downtown, take Bolinas Road and take a left on Porteous, which will land you at the park). Wind your way around the children’s center, and take the trail that starts to the left of the garden. Begin the steady ascent and you’ll arise from the lush landscape of small waterfalls and flagella-like mushrooms onto the mountain’s grassy peak with views of the San Francisco Bay and the city beyond.
