Coastal Traveler - Summer 2007 - (Page 17) coastalmuirbeach The small town of Muir Beach lies amidst the curves of the Highway One and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean that characterize Southern Marin County. Muir Woods, just miles from the small town, is a grove of towering 400 to 1,000-year-old redwoods visited by about two million travelers annually. Muir Woods National Monument In the 19th century, the majority of redwoods in the San Francisco Bay area were felled to provide lumber for building in San Francisco. Today, Muir Woods National Monument is the only remaining stand of old-growth redwoods in the area. In 1907, William Kent insisted that the grove of redwoods on Muir Woods Road be named for the legendary naturalist John Muir. Motorists from San Francisco can reach them by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 101. If they take the Stinson Beach off ramp (just north of Sausalito) and head west on Highway One, they soon find themselves in Muir Beach, just a short distance downhill from Muir Woods. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed that the delegates follow the signing with a ceremony in Muir Woods on May 19. The president himself planned to attend, but died April 12. The ceremony went on as planned. Among these ancient, giant trees the delegates emphasized that “a love of nature is common among men of all nations.” A plaque was also dedicated by the delegates to FDR for his leadership of the Allied forces during the war. Miles of Trails Six miles of trails now wind through the 550-acre preserve. Routes in the park connect with others in the vast expanse of the Mount Tamalpais watershed, and daring hikers can strike out from the paved main trails in a dozen - strenuous - directions. Muir Woods National Monument includes a visitor center, snack bar, and bookshop. The Park is open from 8 a.m. to dusk every day. For more information, call 415.388.2595 or 415.388.2596. Upon leaving the National Monument, travelers can head uphill on Muir Woods Road and then north on Panoramic Highway to find the historic Mountain Home Inn. Long a Bavarian-style way-station for hikers on Mount Tam, Mountain Home Inn is also a restaurant and inn that features winemaker dinners and breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay.
