Coastal Traveler - Summer 2007 - (Page 36) coastalmarshall, tomales&dillonbeach Marshall, Tomales, and Dillon Beach By Jonathan B. Opet Tomales Bay is the backdrop for three historic towns built along the east shore of the bay. The winding road of Highway One leads travelers to Marshall and Tomales, and Dillon Beach is just a short detour west of the highway. Irish immigrants who came to the area as ranchers and farmers settled the towns in the mid19th century. The area is still reminiscent of the west when it was truly wild. Marshall is the first town along the highway north of Point Reyes Station. Boats are scattered on the coastline and distinctive looking homes on stilts connect to the shore. In 1875, a narrow-gauge North Pacific Coast train carried passengers and goods through town. At that time, Marshall had lodging for hunters and fishermen, and also a wharf for schooners, a hotel and a general store. Croatian immigrants made the town a maritime center in the early 20th century. Ship construction and seafood restaurants were a large part of the area’s economy. Stop at the Tomales Regional History Center, open weekends 1 to 4 p.m., for an educational glimpse of the area’s rich history. The William Tell House is a 19th century bar and restaurant, known for its big juicy steaks. Across the street is Tomales Café and Deli, which serves sandwiches on local breads. They also provide free wireless Internet. A couple of doors down is Tomales Bakery; arrive early for breakfast — most of the organic baked goods are sold out by 11 a.m. Turn west from Tomales at Diekmann’s to access Dillon Beach, a small residential community whose population swells in summer months.
