Coastal Traveler - Summer 2007 - (Page 42) hotel’s 86 rooms overlook the harbor. Bodega Harbour recreational subdivision, south of downtown, offers a scenic golf course and fine dining. For those inspired by the town’s bustling port atmosphere, boats take passengers out year-round from Porto Bodega Marina. Fresh crab, rockfish, and lingcod are also sold dockside. Also check out Will’s Fishing Adventures on the north end of town. Beaches Beachgoers on the Sonoma Coast should come prepared with warm clothing; in the mornings, fog banks off the ocean cling to the shoreline. But the fog often burns off by afternoon, and these beaches — some of the most ruggedly beautiful in the world — are hard to resist on a warm summer day. Doran Beach, a mile south of Bodega Beach, is a popular spot for windsurfing and seaside camping. Call ten days ahead for reservations (707.565.2267). North of town, a 17 mile string of public beaches along Highway One make up Sonoma Coast State Beach, renowned as one of the most scenic stretches of coastWhere to Stay Sonoma Coast Living Vacation Rentals & Real Estate • 888.875.3240 Valley Ford Hotel 14416 Hwy 1, Valley Ford • 707.876.1983 line in the state. Popular strands include Salmon Creek Beach, Portuguese Beach, Wright Beach (which has campsites), and Shell Beach. At Goat Rock Beach, just before the Russian River, a colony of harbor seals regularly “hauls out” on a sandbar. The seals are easy to see and photograph, but beachgoers should know that it’s illegal to closely approach the animals. The town of Jenner North of the Russian River Bridge, Highway One passes through the locationally spectacular town of Jenner – the last place to fill up on gasoline for 20 miles. Just inland from Jenner on Highway 116 is the former logging town of Duncan Mills. A Depot Museum recounts the days when trains hauled lumber to San Francisco from the Russian River area. Buildings on both sides of the highway have been restored, among them a general store dating to the early 1900s, several galleries and various shops. Fort Ross North of Jenner, Highway One winds along steep ocean bluffs. The drive climbs more than 700 feet above the Pacific before descending into historic Fort Ross. Founded in 1812, the fort was the eastern-most outpost of tsarist Russia. The fort is now a state park, and its ancient wooden structures have been replicated and restored. The Sea Ranch Still further north, a recreational subdivision called Sea Ranch lines both sides of Highway One for 10 miles. Sea Ranch has architectural appeal, a world-class, 18-hole golf course, a restaurant, and a lodge. The subdivision is private, but the public can use seven different paths across it to reach the shoreline. Where to Eat Seaweed Cafe 1580 East Shore Rd.
