Coastal Traveler - Summer 2007 - (Page 49) coastallake county Funtime Watersports (707.994.6267) in Clearlake rents kayaks, canoes, and fishing boats. Two businesses in Lakeport rent powerboats and Jet Skis: Disney’s Watersports (707.263.0969) and On the Waterfront (707.263.6789). Volcano shaped landscape Along with Clear Lake, the dominant feature of the county’s landscape is Mount Konocti, a dormant volcano which towers over the lake’s western shore. Konocti hasn’t erupted for 100,000 years, but evidence of the region’s previous volcanic activity isn’t hard to find. At Soda Bay, volcanic gasses bubble to the surface of the lake from vents a hundred feet deep. The spectacle is fun to watch, but swimmers should watch out for a small area of the bay, well-marked with signs, where the gasses released are unsafe for prolonged breathing. About five miles further underground, in the southwestern part of the county, molten rock still heats an underground reservoir that produces geysers of boiling water and steam. Geothermal energy from the geysers generates enough electricity for 850,000 homes. Hiking and wildlife Lake County’s lakes, marshes, and forests are home throughout the year to great blue herons, Clark’s and western grebes, ospreys, green herons, double-crested cormorants, and black-crowned night herons. A good spot for birding is Anderson Marsh State Historic Park, at the southern end of the lake. Cobb Mountain Recreation Area offers trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, winding through 3,453 acres of pines in Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest. Native American heritage Lake County has been home to Native Americans for thousands of years. Today six Pomo tribes inhabit the area. The Lake County Museum (707. 263.4555) in Lakeport has an impressive exhibit on Pomo history and the tribe’s basket-weaving skills. The uncrowded area’s relaxed atmosphere and stunningly diverse terrain have attracted visitors, most of them native Californians, for a century; nevertheless, Lake County has remained unfamiliar to many who venture north of the Golden Gate. Vineyards and wine tasting Lake County’s rich volcanic soil has been a boon to the region’s wine grapes, and the area is growing to rival neighboring Napa and Sonoma Counties in viticultural prowess. Brassfield Estate in Clearlake Oaks (707.998.1895) gives winery tours by appointment. Monte Lago Vineyards in Clearlake Oaks (510.599.LAGO) also provides tours by appointment. Watersports & fishing Fishermen across the country call Clear Lake the “Bass capital of the West,” and fishing tournaments are held there throughout the year. Those who would like the benefit of some local expertise may want to call Clear Lake guides Richard Pounds (707.279.4739) or Bob Thein (707.994.4886). Where to Play Disney’s Watersports 401 S.
