Coastal Traveler - Summer 2007 - (Page 6) Early in the morning on any given weekend, Bolinas native Nick Krieger, suited up with his red-orange curls tucked under a plaid cap, can be seen leading a small group down Brighton Avenue with surfboards in tow. Today, Mike Czepiel, 24, of Cupertino, and Kerry Kamon, 24, of Philadelphia, are stiff in their wetsuits. They’ve never surfed before, and Krieger is giving them some pointers. “It’s good to keep your feet on the ground any time you are in the channel because there is a current moving in and out, and you will get pulled out to sea,” Krieger says. “The Channel” refers to a strip of shallow water that rolls over a barreled sandy bottom where the Bolinas Lagoon meets the Pacific Ocean, creating a whitewater prized by surfers. Czepiel and Kamon walk on, mutely receiving their instructor’s cool wisdom. Krieger tells them not to fear, no matter what people say about sharks in the deep, dark Pacific. He has never seen one here. Where the road meets the beach marks the midway point between the Channel and Bolinas’s other surf spot, “the Patch.” The Patch is a break off nearby Duxbury reef that creates smoother and slower moving waves, for a mellow ride. Today, however, the novices will stick to the Channel, where waves are choppier, but arrive more frequently. It’s overcast, and fog hangs low on the horizon. There’s no rain but a cold wind makes exposed skin goose up. Excitement and anticipation steadies Czepiel and Kamon’s nerves. They stand erect, perfectly still while Krieger demonstrates during a 15-minute beach class the proper position on the board – a 9’4” Sunset made of epoxy, and with an additional foam layer on the outside to prevent injury. The body’s weight, he says, should be kept over the center, called the “sweet spot,” which is equidistant between the board’s front and back, and between the board’s right side and left side.
