self-titled - no. 1 - (Page 20) THREE COURSES WITH Michael Gira “ Would you like to share some pancakes?” When Michael Gira—former Swans frontman and current Angels of Light leader—asks this, it’s easy to wonder if it’s a loaded question. After all, he has the reputation of an underground rock madman—the volume at Swans’ concerts occasionally made audience members vomit—despite being an overly polite, mild-mannered 52-year-old. Seated at the comfy Brooklyn diner Hope & Anchor the day after a solo New York gig, Gira peruses the brunch menu before ordering a tortilla, refried beans, sour cream and two eggs, over easy—along with those pancakes. When the waitress asks if he’d like anything else, he requests jalapeños for his tortilla. “Did you say jalapeño sauce or you wanted actual jalepeños on there?” she says. “Actual ones,” Gira responds, matter-offactly, “from the ground.” KORY GROW 1. Coffee self-titled: Why didn’t you perform with a band last night? I’m not going to do a band in the foreseeable future. I’m kind of sick of it. I like organizing people for records to help make a sound, make an environment, but to me it’s the ultimate challenge to perform solo. It’s like sort of auto-pugilism. Performing is much harder because everything depends on words, voice. What did you want to do differently on your latest Angels of Light record, We Are Him? I knew I wanted it to be a little harder in places, just a little more visceral. That was about it. Lyrically, it just sort of grew from the songs. The song “Promise of Water,” that just implied other things, I guess. It’s very intuitive. I don’t analyze what I do very much. Do you feel your songwriting has changed as you’ve gotten older? Well, the writing’s the same. Maybe it’s getting better. But the basic process of writing the songs is the same I don’t know quite what I’m going to do next. Is that a first? No, it happens all the time. But it’s been a while now. That’s OK. I have this sort of vague notion that I’m going to make something very heavy. Do you think about particular people when you’re writing a song? Well, yes. Some of the songs are love songs. The whole last album, The Angels of Light Sing Other People, was about other people, like the title. “I don’t really care about that shit anymore. It doesn’t mean anything to me I loathe irony.” 0 http://www.myspace.com/theangelsoflight
