self-titled - no. 1 - (Page 21) “I’d rather see Devendra Banhart write more serious songs.” Are you still in touch with Devendra Banhart? Yeah. He’s a fantastic musician. I feel like he still has to write his John Wesley Harding. He will. He’s still a kid. I like his new album [2007’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain]. It’s just my preference that I’d rather see him write more serious songs, but that’s just me. I think as he grows older, he could. What do people misunderstand most about you? I think they think I’m this dark and gloomy person. I guess I have an interior side that’s sort of like that, but that’s certainly not what the music is always. I guess it’s intense sometimes, which seems just so ridiculous. But I dug my own grave. Early Swans is pretty much that way, I guess. And people, once they get a picture of you, then they keep it. “ Failure,” a Swans song that you still play, is dark. That’s bordering on caricature, but I think it’s a good song. It’s a song about work, basically. This food is really delicious. 3. Pancakes What’s the story behind We Are Him’s “The Man We Left Behind”? It was about a character leaving his old life behind and thanking the person he loves for accompanying him through it. It’s not necessarily me. It has a country sound. How did that evolve? I don’t know how that came about. I guess the chords implied it I like bluegrass as well. I go to this festival every year. It’s really joyous music. Where is the festival? Upstate. A friend of mine was explaining to me—well, she’s one of the artists I just signed, Larkin Grimm. She grew up in the country, Georgia. She grew up going to those old-time bluegrass festivals. She put it very succinctly, saying that you go to these festivals—these people, they don’t want to be famous. It’s not about that. It’s about the music. It’s about playing the music. It’s about the community No attitude. The music’s just joyous. “God Damn the Sun,” another Swans survivor, isn’t as dark, despite the lyrics. It’s sort of romantic in a way. I don’t know, but to me there’s this whole history of story songs like that. Bertolt Brecht. They’re dark. Is that song fictional? It was based on a friend, but he hadn’t died when I wrote it. He died later. What did he think of it when he heard it? I think he was appalled. [Laughs] He didn’t talk to me for the rest of his life. How it became one of your signature songs probably didn’t help anything. It’s a good song. I’m always looking for the next one. I’m always trying to write an unassailably perfect song. What songs would you hold up with that one? I think “Promise of Water” is a really good song. It’s more abstract, I guess. And that’s sort of an of-the-moment song. How was the food? It was excellent. Did you need the extra jalapeños? Yes, I did need the extra jalapeños. [Laughs] Mainly for my peace of mind. 2. Tortilla, Refried Beans, Sour Cream And Two Eggs, Over Easy What do you look for when signing bands to Young God? I look for originality, not necessarily if someone’s breaking ground or music. I don’t really care about that shit anymore at all. It doesn’t mean anything to me I sort of loathe irony. I really look for singing. I certainly don’t go out looking for freak-folk people.
