self-titled - no. 1 - (Page 26) Magik Markers Singer Elisa Ambrogio breaks down her favorite out-of-print records. It’s almost psychedelic, but I never would have used that word when I first heard it because that would have been a word that made me really sick back then. It sounds like the ocean, if you can imagine a hardcore band that captured that sound. They all bleached their hair and wore high-tops. They were tan and wanted to get laid on tour. But they documented fucking madness. Even if they were posers, they were really good. This song “Crystal Night” takes place in the 20th century. You go to war, and it turns out your buddy is actually Satan. He has witnessed the history of human misery and kind of mocks it. It’s this beautiful, literate, crazy, dark, awful song. But that’s not the whole record. There’s also a field recording of his wife going fishing. The person who played it for me is the love of my life. It’s definitely not music to make out to. I was backpacking through Europe, and I met this weird dude who I thought was a Hungarian creep hanging out with this super-hot German girl who was like 10 feet tall, big tits, blonde and gorgeous. He was wearing All Stars, and I was like, “Converse got behind the Eastern Bloc?” and I found out he was from America. It turned out this dude who I thought was a creepy Hungarian dude was Pete Nolan, who would end up becoming the drummer for Magik Markers a few years later. He leant me his cassette copy; I kept it. I first heard this the year I started playing guitar and took it as a personal challenge. Even though it’s a brutalizing, white-hot, crazy sound, in an alternate universe you can kind of imagine it blasting out of a van with a bumper sticker that says, “Ass, Cash or Grass, Nobody Eats for Free.” But the van has to be buried 10 feet underground and filled with dead bodies. 1. Chain of Strength: True Till Death 7-inch (Revelation, 1989) 2. Pip Proud: Oncer LP (Emperor Jones, 2000) 3. Paris 1942: Paris 1942 LP (Majora, 1997) 4. Donald Miller: A Little Treatise on Morals LP (Audible Hiss, 1995) 5. The City: Now That Everything’s Been Said LP (Epic, 1969) Carole King is a great songwriter. This album is somehow simpler and more direct than some of her later stuff. Just as lyrical and hard hitting, but less James Taylor, more heavy. Her voice seems less produced and raw. There’s a song called “Snow Queen,” and it’s so tough. I wish she had pursued this part of her music life, but it probably wasn’t going to make her as much money. as told to jeremiah griffey Magik Markers’ latest CD, Boss (one of their only records that’s not OOP), is available now through Ecstatic Peace. http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/artist.php?id=5
