Sure, it’s a crude sentiment, but to experience Holy Fuck is to experience the absurd and obscene, making that titular expletive almost necessary. But the band’s privilege to a swear-jar moniker has less to do with sound and a lot more to do with mode of achievement—“electronic music” via broken processors, destroyed pedals, mounds and mounds of garbage pumping through a buzzing sound system. It isn’t the destination (or the destruction); it’s the journey. Much like the group’s gnarly, eponymous debut, 2007’s LP is what, a decade ago, we might have called computer music, but conveyed with sweaty hands and an unsteady heartbeat. Quite simply, LP is an unstoppable, sublimely imperfect freak-out. “We wanted to embrace mistakes,” says multi-instrumentalist Brian Borcherdt. “But all of us also come from guitar-rock backgrounds with delay pedals, four-tracks and toy keyboards.” As much as Borcherdt suggests Holy Fuck’s methods are in its doohickeys, picking out rock cues is a cinch if you listen to the percussion. Anchored by a dual drum attack, LP allows for rhythmic embellishment without losing the dance floor. And the swirling, twirling, whirling synth hiccups play well with the human element of the tom-tearing and snare-shooting. “We were subconsciously reacting to the idea that there was too much control with computers and hi-tech equipment,” says Borcherdt. “We wanted to keep things random and compromise by the limitations of esthetic choice.” Listening to LP—or more importantly, watching Holy Fuck perform it— the question of limitation seems sort of silly. In the moment, there’s nothing this band can’t do. On “Lovely Allen,” perhaps the most candy-coated piece Holy Fuck has ever written, the boys send a Crayola pop melody careening off chubby white clouds. Four minutes later, they’re driving the streets of Miami in a red Corvette on “Royal Gregory,” then soundtracking the bucket-beating wait for a subway train on “Echo Sam.” “The first record we began recording without having a real band, without ever touring, so it was really fresh and chaotic,” says Borcherdt. “This second record resulted out of two years of touring, so we had more cohesive material.” But the cohesion isn’t what sets LP apart. Rather, the group’s creativity mastery of a maelstrom of sounds gives it the edge needed to carry such a hush-worthy title. robbie mackey http://www.myspace.com/holyfuck
