self-titled - no. 1 - (Page 56) To finance their burgeoning rock career, the band members worked random jobs. “I made coffee. I was a bar-eh-sta,” says St. Pe, mispronouncing the term. Bradley chides him for his error. “Whatever, I can at least pronounce ‘guitar player’ now,” St. Pe replies. “That’s all that matters.” For quite some time, their parents weren’t laughing about their sons’ income, but recent success has swayed their opinion. “Our parents are definitely giving us more support these days now that we’re showing some progress,” says Bradley. “But this isn’t the time we need the support. We needed it when we were eating out of trash cans. Now, they’re saying stuff like, ‘We’re so glad to see things are going well,’ as opposed to saying, ‘This is stupid. You need to go to college. What are you doing? You’re a moron!’” Despite growing attention and increasing financial success, the Black Lips still prove they’ll never ditch their juvenile past. At tonight’s Black Lips Circus, which branched into their parade through the streets of Williamsburg, the band’s acoustic set at Sound Fix featured a vaudevillian sideshow. Friends and hired performers performed a ballet choreographed to Britney Spears’s “Toxic,” and a man withstood 0 women standing on a board mounted to his chest. ALL WORK AND ALL PLAY For all their rock bacchanalia, the Black Lips have also proven to be incredibly diligent. In all of 00, a rigorous touring schedule only granted them eight weeks off. At this past year’s SXSW, the Lips survived a dozen shows, numerous photo shoots and countless interviews, all within hours. Their dedication earned video coverage from the New York Times, which dubbed the Black Lips “The Hardest Working Band at SXSW,” a sign of further buzz to come. Making a name for yourself at SXSW? Not bad. Venturing into Israel to tour for 0 days? That’s the kind of stunt few others are willing to pull off. “Since a lot of bands don’t want to go there, the market works for anyone who does,” says Bradley. “We were sold out every night.” The band scored the brief tour through a mix of chance and wanderlust. “We were driving in San Francisco and picked up this Israeli hitchhiker who helped set up the trip,” continues Bradley. “It was funny because we had met a friend of his the previous year at a Paris show who also told us we should visit Israel.” Adam Shore, general manager of Vice Records, notes the tour’s ingenuity and band’s willingness to rock out as many fans as possible as what initially intrigued him and his label about the band. “The Israel trip was something they had organized completely on their own. We just tagged along,” says Shore. “Despite their image, they are four smart, incredibly hard-working guys, who accomplished more than most bands ever will far before we got involved. But there is an incredible love for their music and their shows that goes far beyond those of us at the label. Everyone at Vice all around the world is a Black Lips fan.” “I wanted to be a geneticist as a kid, but I had this elementary school teacher who hated me because I was bad in class. One day she said, ‘You know what, Cole? You’re never gonna be a geneticist!’ And that was that.”
