The middle section that you see is just the nobles on their elephants and their entourage. The peasants and the common folk are going to be on the other sides of them. Originally, this started with the blindfolded woman holding the scales—the classic Greek oracle. The allegory was how rich people depend on astrologers, how it’s the blind leading the blind. There are two Latin inscriptions at the top. One says,‘Cruel leaders do not reign for long,’ and the other says,‘Sometimes it’s better not to know the future.’ “Lots of stories and characters have developed from this piece. The man on the center elephant is the Raj, who’s marrying his sister off to the man on the elephant on the right, a foreign dignitary. It got more and more involved from there, where I kept asking,‘Who is this character, and what are they doing here?’ Maybe I’ll write a short story to go along with each piece eventually.”
