Garden Grove’s Newsy Web Site Wins Honors ONGRATULATIONS to the students of Joon Kim, video, web, and photography instructor at Garden Grove (CA) High School—the winners of the January 2009 Tech Directions Web Site of the Month Award! Their site, www.gghs.us, provides information on their school’s academic programs, administrative and teaching staff, guidance department, and athletics and other extracurricular activities, in addition to special sections for parents and alumni. Tools Used When asked what software his students used, Kim reports that they first produced a mockup using Photoshop and site navigation using Fireworks, then created the site in Dreamweaver. They recently switched to Joomla, an open source content management system. Students still use Photoshop for graphical content, but they do all the coding and design within Joomla, using many third-party modules, plug-ins, and components. Individual students take responsibility for creating the graphical content and layout of each page. They design partly in Photoshop and partly in Joomla, contacting coun- C Site Details During the 2007-08 school year, students in Kim’s Intermediate Web and Graphics class created a site from scratch—then, while impressed with the old site, this year’s students decided to start from scratch again. Kim’s web team, 14 students in all, take full responsibility for design of the site, as well as taking the photos and writing articles posted on it. They work on the site both in class and after school. To get started, Kim and his students searched the Internet for sites that they viewed as featuring both great design and ease of use. Students then went to the drawing board to create mockups that went through a series of revisions. They wanted an aesthetically pleasing site but put even more emphasis on creating one that is content rich. Says Kim, “Ultimately, people go to sites for the content. And we also knew that unless the content is frequently updated and relevant, people would not visit regularly. We wanted our site to be a portal for our school community—a hub of communication—and also a place to showcase the best of what we do here at Garden Grove High School.” Some designs didn’t lend themselves to easy and frequent updates, so Kim’s students decided to model their site The Garden Grove High School Web Team: Adrianna Wysocki—Lead writer, main articles, Argo Profiles, editor; Anna Vu—Writer, Argo Profiles; Anthony Hernandez—Graphic designer; Bao Pham—Writer, Argo Profiles; Derrik Bustos—Athlete Profiles, ASB liaison, quick-links; Kenneth Flores—Photographer, Staff Profiles; Linda Lam—Graphic designer, writer, Academic/About Us sections, photographer; Nam Luong—Lead photographer, Photo Gallery section, Mediatech president; Quyen Do—Master calendar, shooting schedule manager; Shelley Pham— Graphic designer, Activities section; Tenaya Schaeffer—Staff Profiles, ASB liaison, quick-links; Tuyen Nguye— Content designer, Athletics section; Vuong Pham—Athlete Profiles, ASB liaison; William Nguyen—Staff section, Guidance section, photographer www.techdirections.com WEB SITE OF THE MONTH 25 http://www.gghs.us http://www.techdirections.com
