Tech Directions - April 2008 - (Page 15) channel’s Viewer’s Choice Award. From coverage on the Internet, we heard from a teacher in Hong Kong who requested that the video be Bridge project in progress placed on YouTube or a similar site so that “people around the world can see it”! Students in my program are now busy working on planning for another bridge. We started the semes- ter last fall working to bring together the school, businesses, and community to build a 54'-long covered bridge over the Pecatonica River, which runs through downtown Darlington. The students and I met with our chamber of commerce, the school board, and city council. We now have the bridge in the works with a professional engineering firm, the University of WisconsinPlatteville Senior Design Team, the state Department of Natural Resources, and FEMA, along with a group supporting the raising of $30,000 for the project. We have $15,000 in the fund as of February 2008 and plan to start construction on the bridge in the fall. In the mean time, we’re building a smaller, 22'-long covered bridge of the same design as our first in Darlington’s industrial park. It will go along with other improvements the city is undertaking in the area—walking trails, a 50-room motel, and convention center, all of which will give my students’ bridge great exposure. We’re having some serious fun applying a variety of academic subjects—speech, English, math, science—every day. And we’ve also been invited to present our CTE Bridge to the Future program at this year’s Wisconsin Technical Education Association Spring Conference. I’ll be taking the bridge guys to “strut their stuff”!
