F1 Challenge Every year, the Technology Student Association offers middle and high school students the opportunity to participate in the F1 Challenge, an exciting competition that involves the construction and racing of a 1/20th-scale formula one (F1) racecar. The standards-based challenge seeks to promote high-technology engineering skills and teamwork. The F1 Challenge is open to students worldwide. F1 team members learn and work in CAD, CAM, and CNC programs as they perform vari- ous activities at each phase of a fivestep process to design, analyze, make, test, and race their car. U.S. teams may face an elimination event at the state level to qualify for participation in the national challenge, which takes place each year at TSA’s national conference. Participation in the USA F1 Challenge involves an annual team fee of $150. The fee covers team registration and all items in the F1 Challenge Kit (F1 rules book, two car kits, free software options, etc.). If you have students who would like to work together as a F1 team, complete the F1 Challenge Agreement Form (available at www.tsaweb.org/content. asp?parentid=504&contentid=509) and fax or mail it along with the payment to TSA. For more information, contact TSA’s Hillary Lee at 703-860-9000, ext. 16 or hlee@tsaweb.org or visit the F1 website at: www.f1inschools. com. ● A subscription to the CompTIA Pro Member newsletter subscription. The site features online movies every week that highlight various mathematical concepts—such as algebra and geometry—using real-world problems. For instance, the Inventing with Polygons movie introduces the subject to the class. Then, teachers can use any of several lesson plans designed around the movie that explore the topic even further. Students can make necklaces using a pattern of polygons, construct polyhedrons from polygons, and find out why engineers use so many triangles in structures. There’s lots of information here that’s presented in a manner that will appeal to your students. Visit www.thefutureschannel.com/handson_math.php to see for yourself. CompTIA Adds Student Membership Category The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a trade association for the information technology industry, recently announced the addition of a new student membership category, IT StudentPRO, to its CompTIA IT Professional program.
