Tech Directions - August 2007 - (Page 10) Challenge (NEDC), a competition in which teams of students learn and apply engineering skills while working to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Through cross-curricular experience, students will use problem solving, math, science, research, writing, presentation, and drafting/ design to create an engineered assistive technology device. The top five teams will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete for prizes at the annual NEDC finals competition. The team judged to have the best overall design will win $3,000 for its school’s sponsoring department, along with a trip to the 2008 NISH Training and Achievement Conference, May 4–6, 2008, in Los Angeles. Two runner-up teams will receive $1,500 for their sponsoring department. Online registration takes place from September 5–October 26, 2007. In Round I, which closes on October 26, student teams will complete an Internet scavenger hunt, identify and research a problem to solve and produce a preliminary design. Thirty-five teams selected to advance to Round II will build a prototype of their device and submit a professional report by December 17. In Round III, February 15–16, 2008, in Washington, the five finalist teams will present their refined prototype at the finals competition. JETS, headquartered in Alexandria, VA, works to increase students’ interest in and awareness of engineering and technology-based careers. It also produces related resource materials for counselors and parents.
