A spin-off involves giving companies the opportunity to rent a small space on a wall (e.g., in a computer lab) to market their company. Research centers—Although many academic programs (e.g., engineering) have considerable experience with funded research activity, most construction programs are relatively in the infant stage in this area. To assist faculty in this endeavor, our department has found that the presence of research centers can facilitate securing contracts and grants. Our current centers include: ● Architectural Preservation Institute ● Institute for the Built Environment ● Interior West Center for the Innovative Use of Small Diameter Wood ● National Center for Vehicle Emission Control and Safety ● Rural Education Assistance Program ● Technology Education Research and Development Laboratory Academy service—Many of us volunteer our services to the academy associations. While most positions are nonfunded, some organizations, like the Associated Schools of Construction, offer a stipend or reimbursement for travel for those serving in an executive, board, or editorial position. Since most individuals holding these positions would likely attend the meeting anyway, donation of these funds translate into a financial gain for the department. Conference coordination— Our department currently sponsors many annual conferences, among them the Rocky Mountain Asphalt Conference and Equipment Show, International Conference on Information Systems in Engineering and Construction, and Annual Mobil Sources/Clean Air Conference. The primary benefit from this strategy is having a presence. Many strategies discussed in this paper would not succeed if not for the foundation laid during these conferences. Level 5—Endowments The establishment of support endowments assures continual funding which benefits both the donor www.techdirections.com CONSTRUCTION 23 http://www.techdirections.com
