Tech Directions - September 2007 - (Page 36) career directions CAMERA OPERATOR AND VIDEOGRAPHER Capturing a football pass, making Leonardo DiCaprio appear taller than he actually is, and showing television viewers the destruction wrought by a massive tsunami are the sorts of tasks that fall to film and video camera operators. Television, video, and motion picture camera operators produce images that tell a story, inform or entertain an audience, or record an event. They use various cameras to shoot a wide range of material, including television series, news and sporting events, music videos, motion pictures, documentaries, and training sessions. Those who film or videotape private ceremonies and special events, such as weddings and conference sessions, are often called videographers. Many are employed by television stations, cable networks, or independent production companies. Studio camera operators work in a broadcast studio and usually videotape their subjects from a fixed position. News camera operators, also called electronic news gathering (ENG) operators, work as part of a reporting team, following newsworthy events as they unfold. To capture live events, they must anticipate the action and act quickly. ENG operators sometimes edit raw footage on the spot for relay to a television affiliate for broadcast. Camera operators employed in the entertainment field—often called cinematographers—film movies, television programs, and commercials. Cinematographers may be an integral part of the action, using cameras in any of several different mounts. For example, the camera operator can be stationary and shoot whatever passes in front of the lens, or the camera can be mounted on a track, with the camera operator responsible for shooting the scene from different angles or directions. Other camera operators sit on cranes and follow the action while crane operators move them into position. Steadicam operators mount a harness and carry the camera on their shoulders to provide a clear picture while they move about the action. Personal Characteristics and Skills ● Artistic ability, creativity, and imagination ● Good communication and people skills ● Physical strength and stamina ● Ability to work under pressure ● Good hearing and hand-eye coordination ● Normal color vision ● Knowledge of use and maintenance of a variety of cameras and pieces of equipment ● Knowledge of filming methods and equipment ● Knowledge of exposure, focus, color and lighting ● An understanding of the filming process and how a tape will be edited ● Problem-solving and decisionmaking abilities Training High School ● Postsecondary Employers usually seek applicants with a good eye, imagination, and creativity, as well as a good technical understanding of how the camera operates. However, people in the field don’t agree on the best way to prepare for this career. Some think the only way to go is to get a bachelor’s degree from one of the top film schools. Others say you would do just as well to get a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or film studies. Everyone agrees, however, that experience is crucial. Experience teaches you the craft and allows you to produce the “demo reel” that employers or contractors will want to see. Many colleges and universities not only teach filmmaking, but also provide opportunities for work experience, videotaping classrooms for distance education programs, producing promotional videos, working with other students on independent productions, and in college-run television stations. Math ● Television production ● Science ● Photography ● Computers ● Journalism ● Art, art history ● Technology Education Join a photography or camera club or become involved with the media department at your school. You may have the opportunity to videotape sporting events, concerts, or plays. Some school districts have television stations where students can learn the basics of camera operation.
