Tech Directions - October 2007 - (Page 7) the news report Susanne Peckham susanne@techdirections.com Buckminster Fuller Challenge The Buckminster Fuller Institute announces the launch of its first annual Buckminster Fuller Challenge. Established to catalyze the vanguard of a global design science revolution, the Challenge will award a $100,000 prize each year to support development and implementation of the solution that shows the most significant potential to solve the world’s most pressing problems in the shortest possible time, while enhancing ecological stability. Entries will be accepted beginning this fall, with the first prize to be awarded in June 2008. (Awarding of the prize is timed to coincide with the opening of a retrospective exhibit of Fuller’s work at New York City’s Whitney Museum of American Art.) While entry is not limited to students and educators, this competition could provide an excellent and inspiring challenge for technology education students. The first place student(s) will receive a $750 prize and a copy of Apple’s Final Cut Studio 2, a professional video-editing suite, which Apple is donating for the contest. The sec- ond place student(s) will receive a complimentary copy of Apple’s Final Cut Studio 2. Encouraging Girls to Pursue Computing Careers The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) announces creation of the K–12 ACTE Searches for Future Filmmakers The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) announces the first CTE Month Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. Secondary and postsecondary students in CTE-related film, video, and production classes are invited to submit video PSAs designed to celebrate and promote CTE Month during February 2008. The contest requires students to incorporate CTE Month’s logo and theme, “Discovering Skills for a Competitive Workforce,” in the PSA and highlight the importance of CTE.
