Tech Directions - October 2007 - (Page 8) Alliance, a coalition formed to reverse the trend of fewer girls pursuing careers in computing fields. The Alliance comprises 19 educational, industrial, and professional organizations, including the American School Counselor Association, the Association for Computer Machinery, the College Board, the National Girls Collaborative Project, and the Sally Ride Science and Tech Corp. Currently, only 26 percent of information technology workers in the U.S. are women. The Alliance will work to improve understanding of women’s contributions to computing and information technology, remove barriers to participation in the field, advance computing education at the K–12 level, and raise awareness that computational literacy enables success in many careers. The Alliance’s first project involves the release of the “Gotta Have IT” kit, a resource for teachers. The kit contains computing and careers information, digital media, and computing-career posters. Visit www.ncwit.org for information on the Alliance and www.ncwit. org/ghit for specific information on the “Gotta Have IT” kit. summer: advanced personalization features that will enable educators to bookmark, annotate, and share the resources they find. Resources for Invention Education Jerome Lemelson earned more than 500 patents for all kinds of inventions in communications and medical technologies, robotics and strate that they meet the skills criteria. The project should improve woodworking education by providing teachers with guidelines for course planning. Students will benefit from seeing clearly the skills they must acquire for success in the woodworking industry. Regular updates on the project will be available at http://web.mac. com/gheuer212. Events machine vision, and other high-tech stuff. The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation is dedicated to exploring invention in history and encouraging inventive creativity in young people. Teachers and students who want to explore the world of invention can access a wide variety of resource materials on the Lemelson site free of charge. Resources include multimedia and print materials for classroom use, fellowships and internships, articles, invention databases, videos, books, and more! New PBS Web Site PBS’s new Web site for K-12 educators, PBS Teachers, is chock-full of Skill Standards to Be Developed for Woodworking Industries The USDA Forest Service has awarded the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) a grant of $92,000 for a skills standards project aimed at meeting the need for skilled woodworkers in an increasingly competitive global market. In applying for the grant, AWI indicated the need for woodwork manufacturers not only to retain and make optimum use of their current workforce, but to train and retain new workers. The Wood Manufacturing Skill Standards, Evaluations, and Credentials Project is a three-pronged effort. The first phase will create a framework for development of the skills standards. The second phase will focus on development of skills criteria and evaluation documents. The third will launch a credentialing process for individuals who demon- educational resources. Among the site’s features are thousands of free, standards-based lesson plans, classroom activities, and interactive resources, organized by subject, grade level and curriculum topic. Online professional development opportunities from PBS TeacherLine are also available for graduate credit and recertification. Coming this Oct. 10-13. National Career Pathways Annual Conference.
