These include most of the library files in the C:\ WINDOWS\system32 folder, such as user32.dll, gui.dll and kernel32. dll. ● The System Registry database files that record the Windows OS settings and configurations are corrupted or missing. The registry database files are usually located at C:\ WINDOWS\system32\config. ● The wrong hardware drivers are installed or wrong settings are configured. For example, if the screen resolution is set higher than the monitor can support, the graphic user interface will not be shown on the screen. Students then learn about a variety of maintenance and troubleshooting tools. The following are the useful tools/utilities in the Windows OS environment: ● Windows System Backup Utility, ● Windows Advanced Boot Menu, ● Windows Recovery Console, and Windows Emergency Repair Utility. Once students are familiar with the concepts and tools, they are ready for this project. ● Project Objectives The purpose of this activity is to give students the opportunity to (1) learn troubleshooting tools and techniques and (2) apply system backup strategies with a system Boot from Windows 2000 installation CD and press “R” to enter Repair Console. The team approach helps promote cooperative learning and cultivates students’ team spirit. On completion of the project, students will be able to: 1. Use Windows backup utility to ● Back up user data, ● Back up system registry, ● Create emergency repair disks, ● Restore user data, and ● Restore system state. 2. From Advanced Boot Menu, boot to safe mode to fix bad driver problems. 3. From Advanced Boot Menu, use the “Last Known Good” option to quickly restore a damaged registry database. 4.
