Tech Directions - December 2007 - (Page 27) their ideas and that they should try from the start to render them neatly. design sketches should be based on their earlier work. The Design Sketch The design sketch is simply a rough, freehand illustration that is both larger and more detailed than the thumbnail sketch. I instructed students to select at least two ideas and develop them in the design sketch. The design sketch often includes top and side views, so in introducing design sketches, the teacher should introduce multi-view drawing/orthographic projection techniques. In the instruction of design sketches, students learn about the specific content within the design brief, including criteria, specifications, and/or limitations. The students then make decisions based on the particular designs that they select and develop from their concept sketches. At this point, the development of the ideas is now based on the criteria specified in the design brief. I reminded students that their Selected Solution At this point in the design process, the students have completed concept sketches and design sketches. The selected solution is the final step of the graphic portion of the planning process. Students now develop a working drawing, which they will use to produce a mock-up or prototype model. I reminded them that the final idea produced has to follow the criteria of the design brief for evaluation purposes. Students select one of the two design sketches to make into a Fig. 4—Selected solution working drawing—a detailed and accurate illustration of the planned project. Here, they must pay attention to scale, proportion, and dimensioning. The working drawing is a very detailed drawing that includes critical dimensions and instructions that allow for accurate construction of the mock-up or prototype. I also explained that the working drawing produced should be easily traced back through the sketches to the Gigantic Poster Sale!!! Don’t miss it!
