Seattle Schools Win Nontraditional CTE Students Award Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution (IGNITE), a program in the Seattle Public Schools, has won the Programs and Practices That Work: Preparing Students for Nontraditional Careers Award. IGNITE encourages high school girls to enter technology-based professions by exposing them to the many opportunities in technology careers, dispelling stereotypes surrounding technology by networking teenagers with professionals, and providing ongoing opportunities for girls to interact with women in technology industries. Opportunities for interaction include job shadowing, internships, and mentoring. As a sign of the program’s success, after six years of IGNITE, the Seattle schools report that half of their technology classes are filled with girls. Girls formerly comprised a small minority of the school system’s technology students. The Association for Career and Technical Education, the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium, the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity, and the National Women’s Law Center created the award to recognize local and state schools and programs that improve students’ access to and completion of CTE programs that are nontraditional for their gender. The PIA/GATF Presents Graphic Arts Educator Award The Ben Franklin Society, the honor society of the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), has announced the 2007 Frederick D. Kagy Education Award recipient: the Graphic Communications and Printing Technology program at Frederick County Career and Technology Center in Frederick, Maryland. The award was presented to John Augustine, program instructor of 14 years, at The Ben Franklin Society BlackTie Induction and Awards Dinner in Chicago, IL, in November. The mission of the Graphic Communications and Printing Technology program at Frederick County Career and Technology Center is to produce marketable students for the new digital environment of printing by exposing them to everything in the production—from digital file preparation to binding and finishing. Students design a variety of realworld projects and follow them through the plate making, on-press, and finishing processes. Job planning and estimating are introduced as well to further students’ understanding of the print production process. The Frederick D. Kagy Education Award of Excellence, established in 1992, honors the distinguished career of Frederick D. Kagy, professor emeritus at Illinois State University. As one of the most active and influential leaders in the field of graphic communications and technology education, Kagy was an inspiration to thousands of former students and professional colleagues.
