D U N E D I N FA C T S A N D F I G U R E S DUNEDIN FACTS AND FIGURES LOCATION Dunedin is located on the south east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is a city nestled in tree-clad hills at the head of a spectacular harbour. Dunedin is the main centre of, and the gateway to, the region of Otago. GENERAL Population – approx 123,000 (student population 25,000). Dunedin’s most well known attractions are considered to be its unspoilt heritage of Edwardian and Victorian architecture, its proximity to rare wildlife and its natural coastal beauty. Dunedin is a compact city with most hotels and nightlife within easy walking distance CLOTHING Casual and comfortable layers. Always bring some form of wind resistant/showerproof jacket and comfortable footwear - especially if visiting the wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. Warm clothing necessary for the winter months (June-August). SHOPPING The main shopping area is George Street in the city centre.There are also many out of town shops and craft outlets. Shopping in Dunedin is relaxed and unhurried. There is a mix of national and chain stores, a large shopping mall and a highly eclectic mix of Dunedin designer fashion, art and jewellery stores. Antique furniture, china and book shops are scattered throughout the city with a concentration of them in Princes Street. Central City Trading Hours Monday - Thursday 9.00 am - 5.30 pm Friday 9.00 am - 7.00 pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays 10.00 am - 4.00 pm Dunedin is evolving as a fashion frontier for new and innovative designers. The annual id Dunedin Fashion Show attracts visitors and media from around New Zealand and Australia, eager to see the latest creations of Dunedin designers. RESTAURANTS Dunedin has in excess of 150 restaurants/cafés and eating places with a variety of foods to suit all tastes. New Zealand cuisine, European, Asian (including Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Thai) and international favourites are all features. The café/wine bar scene is well established in Dunedin with a focus around the Octagon and North City George Street areas. Licensed Restaurants - sell beer/wine and spirits. BYO Restaurants (BYO = Bring Your Own) - Patrons may take their own bottled wine or beer. NIGHTLIFE Live theatre - Fortune Theatre is the world’s southernmost professional theatre company. Clubs / Bars / Cafés Casino / Shows / Concerts of national and international artists Hotels/Pubs with live band music including original music and musical theme nights. Multi-screen cinema / Art House Cinema WEATHER There is no ‘rainy season’. There are occasional snowfalls and frosts in the winter months but these usually clear during the day. Temperatures reach 20°-25°C in the summer months, 13° – 17°C in autumn, 9° – 12°C in the winter months and 12° – 17°C in spring. Dunedin has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, each bringing their own beauty. RECREATION Sporting facilities are plentiful, both indoor and outdoor. Parks, gyms, facilities for tennis, soccer, badminton. Nine golf courses, swimming pools, nature walks, children’s playgrounds and entertainment. ACCOMMODATION Dunedin offers a wide range of accommodation. Accommodation is either in the central city or within easy access to it (out of town options are also available). Many of Dunedin’s hotels are in the 3 star + to 4 star + range and our boutique Bed and Breakfast properties and heritage homestays are very popular.
