Wen Zhengming (1470 – 1559) The Dunedin Chinese Garden is an example of a late Ming, early Ching Dynasty Scholar’s Garden. This Garden was built by the Dunedin Chinese Garden Trust to create a permanent reminder Dunedin’s Chinese heritage, and gifted to the city after its completion. All the building and garden elements – roof tiles, lattice work, lake rocks and granite paving stones – have been prefabricated in Shanghai and shipped to Dunedin, along with other authentic building materials, giving Dunedin a genuine Chinese Garden. And like all Chinese gardens, Dunedin’s is part of the urban environment, close to the city centre, making this one of only three truly authentic gardens created outside of China. Open 10am – 5pm. Evening viewing, Wednesday 7pm – 9pm. Guided tours 10am and 2pm or by appointment. Guided tours can be arranged prior to 10am and after 5pm. Gift shop. The Gallery houses an impressive collection of New Zealand works covering the period from 1860 to the present. The Gallery also has significant holdings of historical European art, Japanese prints and decorative arts. The Dunedin Public Art Gallery offers a dynamic and varied programme of exhibitions. Though the emphasis is on the fine arts, the programme also explores the decorative arts, design, fashion and moving image. Exhibitions are regularly developed from the permanent collection and touring shows profile the best of international and New Zealand art.
