Dunedin, New Zealand - Tourism and Convention Planner 2008/2009 - (Page 51) A C T I V I T I E S & AT T R A C T I O N S LARNACH CASTLE Visit the old, the new and the view Larnach Castle Discover New Zealand’s only Castle, built from 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his beloved first wife Eliza. 200 workmen spent three years building the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior. Larnach spared no expense on his dream home, which features the finest materials from around the world. With its exciting, sometimes scandalous, sometimes tragic history, its magnificent carved ceilings, New Zealand antiques and breathtaking views, Larnach Castle offers you a vision of the past and present. Today, the Castle is home to the Barker family who have lovingly restored the building and recreated the beauty of the 35 acres of gardens and grounds. Larnach Gardens Larnach Castle is set in 35 acres of magnificent gardens and grounds. Renowned as one of NZ’s finest gardens it is a top rating “Garden of National Significance”. Margaret Barker’s personal creation over 40 years continues to be developed within the original framework of paths, hedges and trees. Special collections of Southern Hemisphere plants grow in size and diversity in our South Seas Garden. Spring brings jewel-like flowers to the rock garden and splendid displays of rhododendrons and azaleas. Herbaceous plantings peak in summer, followed by Scottish Heathers in autumn. Guests may enjoy Castle and garden tours, delicious lunch or devonshire tea in the Castle Ballroom Café and evening celebrations in the Ballroom, which hosts many special occasions.
