What if I told you that clairvoyance isn’t necessary; you can access all of ChemicalProcessing.com’s newly added content with just a quick and simple click of a button? Enter Really Simple Syndication (RSS). RSS is a type of Web site feed that delivers recently published content to you. This easy-to-use tool brings you the news you want, updating you on recent posts from the Web sites you’ve selected. To set up your own RSS feed, following these really simple steps: 1. Find yourself an RSS reader. There are several RSS readers to chose from including Yahoo (www.yahoo.com), Newsgator (www.newsgator.com), Bloglines (www.bloglines.com), Google Reader (www.google.com/reader), Netvibes (www.netvibes.com), Pageflakes (www.pageflakes.com) and Rojo (www.rojo.com). There are many more RSS readers out there, but these are the most popular. 2. Create your RSS reader account. All of the readers mentioned in step one are available at no cost and can be accessed and activated with an e-mail address and a password. Once you’ve created your account you may begin to add your feeds. 3. Search and subscribe to RSS feeds. After you’ve created an account, you’ll want to add feed subscriptions to it. The number of subscriptions can be as sizable or as minimal as you’d like. The more feeds you subscribe to, the more information you can access. Begin your search by visiting Web sites that you go to often. 4. Locate the feed icon. Every Web site that is RSS-readable should contain a universal feed icon — a square, orange button with a circle and two curved lines. When you discover a Web site you’d like to subscribe to, click on this button and you’ll be taken to a separate screen. 5. Read and enjoy your RSS subscriptions. RSS became extremely popular in the 21st century as online publishing evolved into what it is today; however, RSS wasn’t always as easy, or simple. RSS had originally been conceived as a value-added feature to now-defunct Netscape’s web service. The concept was still the same — collecting subscriptions that would deliver news to the user — but had only been available for Netscape account holders. Thanks to the recent wave of technological innovations, RSS and feed readers are available to the masses.
