Food Processing - January 2008 - (Page 10) NEWS BITES •CONSUMER TRENDS• Next exotic superfruit: yumberry Frutzzo is betting the exotic but enticingly named yumberry will be next pomegranate. the Alpine, utah, company late last year introduced versions of yumberry juice into several markets. in new York and the Midwest, Frutzzo “natural” Yumberry juice sells for $3 a bottle; an organic version retails for $3.60. A yumberry-pomegranate blend is available in the southeast. Frutzzo also reportedly is developing cherry and blueberry blends of yumberry. “We scour the globe to find the most nutrient-packed ingredients available that are at once unusual and delicious – yumberry raises the bar like no other,” says terry Xanthos, president and co-founder of Frutzzo (www.frutzzo.com). the purplish juice has a tart-sweet flavor, not unlike pomegranate, and it’s similarly blessed with antioxidants. it also contains a wide range of vitamins, including vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin and carotene. in China, where it’s been grown for 2,000 years, it’s called yang-mei, and more traditional translations call it red bayberry or Chinese bayberry. the New York Times reported the name yumberry was given to it in 2003 by an indiana importer. the Times also reports it’s so popular in China that twice as many acres are devoted to the purple or red, bumpysurfaced fruit than are planted for apples in the u.s. the whole fruit is not yet available for purchase in America, although it is chewy and juicy with a pit like a cherry. sunopta Fruit group announced plans earlier in 2007 to market the fruit in north America.
