Food Processing - January 2008 - (Page 11) NEWS BITES • R E G U L AT O R Y• Tyson rewrites its antibiotic-free chicken label “After six weeks of consumer reseArch And discussion,” tyson foods inc. in late december announced new usdA-approved language for the company’s product labels: “chicken raised without antibiotics that impact antibiotic resistance in humans.” tyson (www.tyson.com) last may proclaimed itself the first major poultry company to label its products “raised without antibiotics.” despite initial usdA approval of the terminology, agency officials in late november said it was a mistake to allow the claim, and they asked the springdale, Ark., company to stop using it. tyson all along stood by the claim but admitted its chickens may consume feed with ionophores, which prevent an intestinal infection in poultry. tyson contends the product is only an antimicrobial; usdA claims it’s an antibiotic. regardless, both sides apparently agree the material is not used in human medicine and therefore does not contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance to important human drugs, “which is the major reason anyone is concerned about antibiotics in poultry production,” tyson says. Mergers & Acquisitions one month after selling its u.s. sugar candy business Brach’s in november, Barry Callebaut AG, Zurich, switzerland, bought Food Processing International Inc., an eddystone, Pa., maker of cocoa products. FPi’s facility has a capacity of 25,000 metric tons per year of cocoa liquor, but Barry callebaut officials plan to double that within two to three years. TreeHouse Foods Inc., Westchester, ill., bought certain assets of E.D. Smith & Sons Ltd. for $220 million in cash. the canadian company, with sales of about $245 million, makes branded and private label jams, ketchup, pie fillings, sauces and marinades with three canadian plants and one plant in north east, Pa.
