Supply chain makes for a good “bridge” because it encompasses external as well as internal suppliers of ingredients, equipment, packaging and other components of a product launch, as well as the logistics involved in bringing them all together. Ralph Jerome, vice president of research and development at Mars Snackfood U.S., likes to call it “distributed R&D.” “Globally, we have a networked R&D community. All the R&D heads from all the units around the world meet in person for a week every year. It’s always at a Mars location – Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Australia, the U.K.,” he says. “Plus, we have segment meetings (food, snack, pet, etc.) two or three times a year, so we get a sense of what’s going on in the other segments. In addition, the R&D heads from all segments have a conference call monthly to discuss cross-regional issues, such as quality.
