Food Processing - June 2008 - (Page 10) Good Private Label Start T he Nielsen figures are out and once again they show that private label is growing. Sales of store brands at supermarkets last year climbed to nearly $50 billion for an increase of $3.5 billion. Unit market share surpassed 21% and dollar share hit a new high of 17.1% It should be no surprise, since polls show that more than 40% of consumers now say that they are frequent buyers of private label, compared to 16% fifteen years ago. The Importance Of Ingredients Not Your Father’s Generics Anymore Of course, today’s store brands don’t in any way resemble the black and white generics of the 1980’s. Today’s private label products combine sophisticated product concepts with attractive packaging. Take a walk into Kroger, Safeway, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Wal-Mart or Target, to name just a few retailers, and you see what store brands mean. Today’s store brands, however, depend on good ingredients. Without the best raw materials, retailers cannot hope to make consumers happy. That’s the challenge, too: maintaining a steady stream of good ingredients, good packaging, and good product ideas. Whether it is omega-3 or gluten-free, the growth of private label will require a close working partnership of manufacturers and suppliers.
