Food Processing - October 2007 - (Page 16) ADVERTISEMENT NEWS BITES North AmericA’s FiNest receive 2007 Gold medAl iPm PArtNer AwArds U.S. and Canadian Winners Obtain Recognition for Integrated Pest Management Excellence •MARKETING• Bitter nostalgia: Moxie soda tries a revival Moxie, a bitter soda that once outsold coke, may be on a comeback thanks to new owners cornucopia beverages co., bedford, n.h., a subsidiary of coca-cola co. of northern new england inc. the 1876-vintage drink, called the country’s first mass-produced soft drink, spent the past 50 years being drunk by a small but diehard following, which bought the elixir in corner groceries and a few supermarkets across new england. but cornucopia, which earlier this year bought the brand from an atlanta business, has been aggressively marketing the drink across new england at minor league baseball parks, a lottery for moose hunting permits and even at Wal-Mart stores, according to the Boston Globe. a three-day festival this past summer in honor of the beverage attracted thousands. augustin thompson, a pharmacist with the ayer drug co. in lowell, Mass., created Moxie in 1876 from the gentian root extract that he brought back from south america, according to the newspaper. thompson patented his creation as a medicine and dubbed it “Moxie nerve Food,” marketing it as a cure for almost any illness, including paralysis and “softening of the brain.” in 1884, as carbonated drinks were catching on, Moxie went carbonated. sales took off, with 5 million bottles sold that year. the cure-all claims ended with the Pure Food and drug act of 1906, but the aggressive marketing kept Moxie bottlers across the country busy. the Boston Globe said red sox slugger ted Williams promoted the drink, and President calvin coolidge is said to have toasted his swearing-in with a Moxie. detractors call it bitter and medicinal, and even fans concede it’s an acquired taste. but cornucopia presses on and has launched a trial program to sell Moxie for the first time in Florida, where company officials believe many fans of the drink might be living in retirement. the new owners also may be able to capitalize on the one brand extension of the past century: Moxie energy drinks introduced in 2004.
