Not only that, we are always on the lookout for products that slipped by us on the way to the supermarket shelves. Then there are the food and ingredient shows we attend. Altogether, this means we probably encounter more than 1,000 new food and beverage products each year. Early in the fall, each editor and advisory board member submits up to 12 items that are deemed subjective “top” candidates. Our in-house editorial staff together winnows that number down, and we keep doing so until we end up with a total of about 10. We judge based on taste, packaging, practicality, availability and trendiness (organic, healthy etc.). All in all, there are quite a few gauntlets for a new food or beverage to run through. In the end, though, if a product’s taste doesn’t bowl us over, all the other stuff counts for nothing. Following are the 10 new products that most impressed us over the past 12 months, ones that we actually and actively buy ourselves – and rave about to our neighbors. 18 • FOOD PROCESSING NOVEMBER 2007 CHIPS WITH HALF A SERVING OF VEGETABLES Busy Americans typically snack four times a day. It has been the mantra of Plano, Texasbased Frito-Lay North America, the world’s largest producer of snack foods, to develop healthier snacks. In 2002, the Frito-Lay div. of PepsiCo was one of the fi rst major manufacturers to make healthier snacks by eliminating oils that create trans fats, even though solid fats are easier to use in the manufacturing process. In 2004, PepsiCo jumpstarted its Smart Spot label, identifying healthier options in snacks and beverages.
