The efficiency is low (<50%) because the luminaires reflect off ceilings. They should be evenly distributed to avoid excessive luminance. Indirect lighting can provide a calm, diffuse light without highlights or shadows. New optics around the reflection properties of T8/ T5 lamps in recessed 2 ft by 4 ft housings controls the brightness into the higher viewing angles.
