Icelandair Holidays 2008 - (Page 23) www.icelandair.co.uk I 0800 988 9989 I 23 the sIlence + ThE PEOPLE When I was a child I sometimes heard people speak about Iceland. I thought they meant there was a land made of ice. I imagined Icelanders living in igloos and travelling around on sleds drawn by teams of dogs. I was actually disappointed when I met an Icelander for the first time and realised that my ideas about Iceland were essentially wrong. he told me about friendly people who lead a great life in comfort and luxury in a highly cultured and modern Western European society. 2006-2007 + ThE BLuE LAgOON Just before leaving Iceland I lay in the soothing geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, surrounded by the moon-like landscape of the lava rocks. The contrast between land and water was awe-inspiring and reminded me of the silence of the wilderness a day earlier. + ThE BLACK SAND I went on a trip along the south coast, visiting small fishing villages, tasting a delicious lobster soup and taking in a magnificent landscape. We drove down to the coast to watch the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean crashing onto the sandy beach. And it’s black. It’s an amazing experience to walk in the black sand. There are tales of ghosts lurking behind rocks on the shore and I was almost disappointed not to see any. That didn´t matter though – the beauty of the surroundings was enough for me. + gRóTTA I have always been fascinated by lighthouses. much of the city of Reykjavík is built on a long headland and at its tip there is a lighthouse. It stands on an island you can reach by crossing a causeway at low tide. It was there that I discovered the beauty and importance of silence. It is a discovery I will never forget. http://www.icelandair.co.uk
