CURRENCY: The Icelandic króna (Isk) is the currency used in Iceland. The bank notes celebrate independence heroes and bishops. The coins, on the other hand, are decorated with marine life, the foundation of the Icelandic economy. Credit cards can be used everywhere in Iceland. Most major credit cards are accepted. INTERNET AND MoBILE CoNNECTIoNS: Don’t worry! you’ll have access to the Internet in Iceland. Iceland is a country with one of the world’s highest Internet and mobile phone coverage rates, with good connections in most places. There are numerous internet hotspot locations in towns and villages throughout the country in hotels, cafés, restaurants, pubs and many other public places. TIME zoNE: Greenwich Mean Time. LANgUAgE: Icelanders speak Icelandic. Unlike many other countries, the ancient literature, written around AD 1300, can be read by modern Icelanders. The language, therefore, is closely linked to the nation’s sense of identity, as is the country’s nature. Literacy in Iceland is among the highest in the world, and Iceland is often referred to as a literary country. There are some, however, who maintain that the number of people who write is greater than the number of people who read, as Icelanders are notorious for being closet authors. CLIMATE: Contradicting the country’s name, the climate in Iceland is rather mild. During the summer, everything is lovely and ICELAND FACTS green and the sun works its magic by day and by night. One cannot, however, depend on the weather being fine. Icelandic skiers are generally unhappy with Icelandic winters, as it can be difficult to go skiing due to lack of snow. Others find it easier to come to terms with mild winters, and the occasional snow storms are regarded as a novelty. WHAT To WEAR: It is best to pack an all-weather jacket with hood, warm hat, scarf and gloves, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a bathing suit to enjoy the Icelanders´ favourite pastime!
