Cadalyst - June 2008 - (Page 13) ADVERTISEMENT Model-Centric Design Put to the Test The renovation and rebirth of Beloit, Wisconsin is keeping the city' s Engineering Division very busy. The city' s five engineers, three aides, and two GIS professionals are providing design, plan review and inspection services to capital improvement projects, mostly on urban reconstruction projects and utility or local roadway extensions. With multiple stakeholders, changes come suddenly. The Engineering Division needs to respond quickly, with civil engineering software that can react as quickly as they do. The city chose to move to modelcentric design with AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software: ª We all felt that the automatic link between design and documentation would give us the dexterity to make changes mid-design and still meet our schedules and deadlines. That meant Civil 3D,º explains Beloit city engineer Michael Flesch. The new software met a significant early test with the design and construction of Kettle Way, a new cul-de-sac in a local industrial park. Among other things, Kettle Way required a roadway widening and design and construction of water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and sidewalks. What was more, the Engineering Division was asked to use excavation material to cap an old wastewater treatment plant, requiring documentation for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). ª We used Civil 3D to determine the exact earthwork volumes, which helped us determine how much cut would be available for the cap,º says Luke Arnold, Project Engineer. After the site was capped, a survey to verify the thickness of the cap provided data for Civil 3D to create a color-coded volume surface accurately representing the difference between the original and new surfaces. ª As a result, WDNR was able to better visualize the work and give us closure for the project,º says Arnold. Civil 3D also helped the city accommodate a major redesign of the cul-de-sac after construction began. The model-centric nature of Civil 3D enabled quick evaluation of multiple scenarios without spending valuable time redoing documentation. ª I changed the profiles or edge of pavement alignments eight times, checking how those changes affected other parts of the design,º explains Arnold. ª Only a small part of that time AutoCAD Civil 3D software gives the City of Beloit, WI Engineering Division the dexterity to accommodate changing project priorities and schedules.
