Classic Vactions - Classic Europe 2008 - (Page 8) tips for traveling in Europe When planning your European vacation, peruse these tips to ensure your experience is everything you hope for. PASSPORT & VISAS U.S. citizens, including infants, traveling to Europe are required to present a valid passport. An entry visa is required for U.S. citizens to enter Turkey and Russia. Turkish visas can be purchased upon arrival at any Turkish port of entry. Citizens of other countries should contact the consulate of the country being visited for information on visas. WHEN TO GO June through September is the high tourist season. Spring and fall offer more comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and often lower rates. Many hotels are closed for the winter, such as those in Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Rapallo, Positano, Mykonos, and Santorini. BEDDING Most hotels offer the option of one double bed or two twin beds. In some cases, two twins can be pushed together to create one bed. In Santorini, most double beds are built on platforms and cannot be pulled apart. TIPPING As a general guide, porters and bellmen at airports and hotels receive $2 per bag, maids receive $1 per night, and waiters receive 10 to 15 percent of the bill (make sure that it has not already been added to your check). Group tour guides and drivers receive a minimum of $2 per person; private tour guides and drivers receive 10 to 15 percent of the cost of the tour. CURRENCY The euro is the primary currency for most of Classic Europe’s destinations, although U.S. dollars are accepted. CUSTOMER SERVICE Should you need assistance while traveling, your Classic itinerary will list toll-free customer service telephone numbers. Classic offers a representative in Athens as well as a U.S.-based customer service department who can provide assistance. 8 CLASSIC EUROPE 2008
