Classic Vacations - Classic Tahiti 2008 - (Page 29) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Every visitor to Tahiti must have: • A passport valid for six months beyond your date of return • A return airline ticket to your resident country or to at least two more continuing destinations • Sufficient funds to cover your planned stay For stays of up to one month, there are no visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, or Mexico. As entry requirements are subject to modification without notice, it is advisable to check with your Travel Specialist before departure, or one of the French consulates in North America. WEATHER The air temperature in Tahiti averages 79 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The ocean and lagoon waters average 80 degrees year round, with less than a degree of variation from the surface to 150 feet. This tropical destination has plenty of sun and enough rain to keep the waterfalls flowing and the flowers blooming. Summer is from November through April, when the climate is slightly warmer and more humid. Winter is from May through October, when the climate is slightly cooler and drier. LANGUAGE Even though English is spoken and understood in most hotels, restaurants, and shops, learning a few Tahitian words and phrases is encouraged and appreciated. It can also be helpful, but not mandatory, to brush up on a few basic French phrases, as French and Tahitian are the official languages and both are commonly used. TIME DIFFERENCE The islands are just two hours behind Pacific Standard Time. During daylight-saving time (late March to early November) they are three hours behind. WHAT TO PACK Plan to bring comfortable summer clothes, such as shorts, T-shirts, and swimsuits as well as sandals and reef-walking shoes. In the evenings, casual slacks and sport shirts are appropriate for men, and sundresses for women. TIPPING Tipping is not customary in Polynesian culture and is therefore not expected. It is welcomed, however, for exemplary service. CLASSIC VACATIONS 29
