A remarkable feat of engineering, she was the largest and most luxuriously appointed ship ever seen and, despite her tragic sinking five days later, she remains a source of enduring pride in the city where she was built - Belfast. At the time Belfast was at the leading edge of marine engineering and tens of thousand were employed by shipbuilders Harland and Wolff. The lives of these people and the city itself became forever linked to the wonder of Titanic and it is a story that is only now beginning to be told. Since opening in July 2006 over 8,000 visitors to Belfast have been transported back in time along the Titanic trail. The tour takes in the Thompson Dock and Pump House where the celebrated RMS Titanic had its final fit-out. A must see, the Pump House is one of the most significant heritage buildings from the Titanic era. One can also take to the water on the SS Nomadic, the only remaining link to Titanic left afloat. Nomadic, the last White Star Line vessel in the world, brought first class passengers from port out to the Titanic and is currently undergoing a complete restoration to return her to her former glory. Another integral part of the experience is the ‘Titanic exhibition’ at the Ulster Folk and Transport museum which has a superb collection of material from that special time. Belfast is a city which embraces its Titanic past and has a wonderful vision of how this should be celebrated in the future. March 2008 sees the “Titanic – Made in Belfast festival” and is one of a number of events marking the city, and indeed Northern Ireland, as one of Europe’s new premier vacation destinations.
