Continental Airlines Vacations - Mexico 2008 - (Page 53) I NDEPENDENT TOURS a taste of the Yucatan 6 days/5 nights Yucatan natural history 5 days/4 nights Day 1: Arrive in Merida and transfer to the hotel. An evening orientation will introduce us to the Tour Leader, who will provide a briefing of the excursions to come. Day 2: After breakfast, we take a leisurely drive through the Celestun Biosphere Reserve, famous for its pink flamingoes.. A boat cruise here takes us to the breeding ground of pelicans, fish eagles, and cormorants. Lunch will be served before returning to Merida where the rest of the day is at leisure. (L) Day 3: We head southwest to the Village of Maxcanu and continue to the oxkintok Valley, surrounded by ancient Mayan monuments. oxkintok is the largest known cavern in the Yucatan. Here we will explore the cave for three hours before returning to the village for lunch. Afterwards, we continue to Valladolid for our overnight stay. (L,D) Day 4: After breakfast we continue to ek Balam, the newest Mayan discovery center open to the public. We then continue to Ria Lagartos and navigate the estuary, where we will have the opportunity to identify amphibians and reptiles of the region. After lunch, we return to Merida where the remainder of the day is at leisure. (L,D) Day 5: Transfer to the Merida airport for the return flight home. Day 2: The morning begins with a panoramic tour of Merida, including the Museum of History, city hall, and cathedral. Later, continue to the Hacienda Teya for lunch before departing for Sotuta to visit the colonial edifices and main temple. Afterwards, continue to Yaxcaba for a walking site lecture. Later in the afternoon, arrive in Mayaland where we will spend the night. (L) Day 3: Early morning departure for the archaeological ceremonial center of Chichen-Itza, where we will enjoy a walking site lecture and lunch at the site. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the ancient city on your own. This evening we will enjoy the spectacular Light and Sound show at the ruins. (L,D) Day 4: Early morning departure for uxmal. En route we visit the colonial town of Izamal and then continue to the ancient citadel of Mayapan. We continue to oxkutzcab and visit the fruit market and colonial missions. We stop at Tikal for lunch and to explore the arts and crafts workshops, then stop at the beautiful Mayan citadel of Kabah. We arrive in uxmal in the early afternoon and then attend a Light and Sound spectacle at the Uxmal Ceremonial Center. (B,L,D) Day 5: Enjoy a guided tour of uxmal, considered the finest ceremonial center in the land. Afterwards, we visit the sites of Kabah and Labna before returning to Merida.
