CaribbeanTravel.com Directory - (Page 7) ANTIGUA & BARBUDA the annual Antigua Race Week, participants come from around the world for five days of challenging events and parties beginning on the last Sunday each April. Much of the yachting fun centers on historic Nelson’s Dockyard at English Harbour. The Dockyard dates back to the 18th century when Antigua was the headquarters of the British Royal Navy Caribbean fleet commanded by Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. The former naval HQ now houses crafts, souvenir and nautical shops, as well as charming restaurants and bars. The weekly Sunday sunset barbecue at Shirley Heights, with live steel band music and panoramic harbor views, draws visitors and locals alike. History is everywhere on Antigua. The remnants of more than 100 sugar mills around the island hearken back to the island’s plantation days. Two are at Betty’s Hope Plantation, which operated from the 1650s to around 1900 and is now an openair museum. Another historic site, Redcliffe Quay, houses restaurants and specialty shops on the grounds of a former slave compound. More crafts and shops beckon in St. John’s, the capital, particularly on Friday and Saturday mornings, when the farmers market comes to town. Also in St. John’s, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda offers an overview of the islands, from their volcanic and coral origins through the Colonial period and political independence. Exhibits include a life-size replica of an Arawak house and pre-Colonial artifacts. general information ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All US citizens must have a valid passport to re-enter the United States.
