Evans L eft hand, meet right hand. Let’s stay in touch. When I wrote in November that “Di Qui’s article on geoencryption with Loran represents to my knowledge the first article ever published in this magazine that is not about GPS or some other GNSS,” I completely neglected the wealth of material that Richard Langley has provided in the Innovation column over the years. Of course we’ve presented many articles on the integration of other technologies, sensors, or media with a GNSS receiver. But for the standalone, if you will, usage of another technology for positioning, Richard had the market cornered. Prior to “Security for Insecure What — or who— drives the search for other positioning solutions, whether co-harnessed, complementary, or competing? Times” in November, at least. As recently as July, Innovation covered the use of AM radio signals for positioning: “Opportunistic Navigation.” In July 2006, it featured an article on enhanced Loran — although in my defense it was not standalone in that case, but an integrated tracking system with GPS. September 2005 found Langley and his authors delving into “Use of Broadcast TV Signals to Fill GPS Acquisition Gaps.” Again though, note that we’re filling gaps, not standing alone. And so on, and so on. All Innovation columns, by the way, dating back to June 2001 — not the complete oeuvre, but 44 percent of it, near as I can calculate — are conveniently collected and easily accessed on our website. Just cruise down the lefthand navigation bar and find the button under the Resources heading. What — or who — drives the search for other positioning, navigation, and timing solutions, whether co-harnessed, complementary, or competing? It’s those danged consumers, that’s who. For nearly a decade — the first decade of GPS technology’s use by various professionals, and coincidentally the first decade of this magazine’s life — innovative research focused on wringing more out of the GPS signal itself: dualfrequency, carrier-wave, RTK. Because almost all use occurred outdoors, and challenges involved visibility, latitude, canopy, distance from reference stations, and so on. Then the tiny little cell of nonprofessional use was nurtured and encouraged to grow, to the point where it has taken on behemoth proportions. With a commensurate appetite for position and navigation data. Why, these people want to know where they are, at every instant, in tunnels, parking garages, urban canyons, inside offices and malls and skyscrapers. The nerve. So we must assemble all the tools we can, and invent new ones. I marvel at the ingenuity of engineers who can take advantage of every, it seems, waveform known to science, and turn it to position’s advantage. Just don’t tell me that next we’ll be harnessing the tides for PNT.
