GPS World - May 2008 - (Page 41) 50+ LEADERS TO WATCH Dennis M. Akos Assistant Professor | University of Colorado ª My efforts will continue to focus on leveraging/expanding the software defined radio (SDR) architecture for GNSS, enabling the lowest cost/highest performance combination receiver architecture for all GNSS signals available. To overcome limitations associated with the current and planned GNSS, the research focus will expand to include the incorporation of two of the most promising complimentary technologies: antenna arrays and GPS/INS (MEMS-based) integration. The SDR-based GNSS receiver is ideal for exploring and testing these promising areas to provide the best possible overall navigation performance. º Steve Rounds Senior Director | Advanced Technology, L-3 Communications/Interstate Electronics ª I look forward to development and deployment of aids to GPS to improve its robustness and availability Ð more sensor fusion as well as anti-jamming techniques for military applications. We have come to rely on GPS to such a degree that having it denied while indoors or in other challenging environments is becoming unacceptable. º Langhorne Bond President | International Loran Association Noppadol Pringvanich Executive Officer | Systems Engineering, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand ª Implementation of GNSS is a strategic step forward for the aviation industry in the AsiaPacific region. Harmonization of practices and collaborations among aviation stakeholders are the critical factors ensuring the success of this regional effort. As a part of the International Civil Aviation Organization Asia-Pacific Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) Task Force and the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation GNSS Implementation Team, I will focus on the development of the PBN Regional Plan and work cooperatively with all aviation partners in the region to push forward GNSS implementations for both route redefining and terminal area and approach operations.º www.gpsworld.com Former administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, Bond began working on navigation safety in 1997 His thesis that GNSS reliance . as a ª sole meansº of PNT was unsafe for use where safety of life and great economic risk were at stake was initially greeted with hostility from the satellite industry. He advocated Loran as a low-cost, reliable, secure backup to GNSS. Today, the need for such backup is widely accepted. Recently the U.S. government cancelled its plans to decommission Loran and acknowledged the need for a GPS backup. Kathleen Boseley Technical Manager | Military Aircraft Applications, Honeywell Defense and Space Involved in Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) study programs and unmanned air vehicle (UAV) applications for military aircraft carrier landings under all weather conditions, Bosely will direct technical efforts on navigation systems in the emerging UAV market. These include analysis and integration of GPS M-code capabilities, enhanced performance in anti-jam environments, WAAS and LAAS aiding for manned and unmanned military aircraft, and commercial aiding sources to improve accuracies.
