GPS World - May 2008 - (Page 43) 50+ LEADERS TO WATCH Matt Higgins Principal Survey Advisor | Dept. of Natural Resources and Water, Queensland Govt., Australia; Vice President | International Federation of Surveyors ª I will be working across a wide range of activities locally, nationally, and internationally: Expanding local GNSS reference station infrastructure through our SunPOZ real-time positioning service for Queensland; launching the new Australian Region in the European Satellite Navigation Competition; helping build Australia' s next-generation GNSS network through the AuScope project; exploring opportunities for Queensland to host ground facilities for several GNSS constellations; and working in the U.N. International Committee on GNSS to improve interaction between GNSS system providers and users, including the challenges for developing countries.º Gerhard Beutler Director | Astronomical Institute, University of Bern ª Scientific exploitation of GNSS, including precise orbit determination of GNSS satellites and of low-Earth orbiters carrying GPS receivers, is my key interest. My research focus currently is on gravity field determination using data from spaceborne GPS receivers; activities are imbedded in the Technical University of Munich' s Institute of Advanced Study. The monograph ª Methods of Celestial Mechanicsº (Springer-Verlag, 2005) puts developments into the context of satellite geodesy and celestial mechanics.º Andreas Thiel Executive Vice President Hardware Development, Co-founder | u-blox AG ª To go beyond delivering the smallest, fastest, and most accurate solutions, we must develop new applications and markets and work even harder to meet the needs of our growing client base. We have widened our network of regional offices and built application engineering centers in the U.S., Asia, and Switzerland to bring us closer to our clients' base of operations, enhance our service, and open lines of dialog to match our products more closely to their needs.º Susan Skone Associate Professor | Department of Geomatics Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary Bruno Scherzinger Chief Technology Officer | Applanix Corporation ª My core interest is GNSS-aided INS for mobile survey and mapping. I look for ways to integrate GNSS positioning algorithms with inertial navigation for better performance in accuracy, reliability and convergence time than unaided GNSS positioning can achieve. Inertially-aided RTK uses inertial coast to preserve the ambiguity search space through a GNSS outage and thereby achieve fixed integer RTK in seconds after the outage ends. One of my goals this year is to explore the possibility of comparable performance improvement from inertially-aided precisepoint-positioning. º www.gpsworld.com Involved in several exciting research projects, Skone is project leader for the GPS radio occultation payload onboard the CanX-2 nanosatellite, scheduled for launch in late April 2008. She will also lead the GPS component of UNSTABLE, a collaborative effort to study severe weather processes in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Other projects, in collaboration with government and industry partners, include development of a meteorological probe for commercial aircraft, implementation of a GNSS space weather service for Canada, and development of a real-time national atmospheric moisture product using GNSS.
