GPS World - May 2008 - (Page 46) GPS WORLD EXCLUSIVE Attila Komjathy Research Scientist | NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory ª Combining COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 satellite GPS data and ground-based receiver data into the JPL/USC Global Assimilative Ionospheric Model, we are estimating 3D global electron density structures and physical drivers with unprecedented accuracy. I also focus on very high-precision ionospheric remote sensing such as detecting small-scale TEC perturbations caused by earthquake-generated tsunamis.º Keith F. McDonald Principal Signal Processing Engineer | The MITRE Corporation Keith leads MITRE' s support to the GPS Wing' s Advanced User Equipment Branch as well as to other government organizations with synergistic goals. He and his team advise the government on the development, procurement, and testing of GPS user equipment to meet the evolving requirements of military platforms. As MITRE' s GPS User Equipment Lead, Keith directs technical analysis, modeling and simulation, prototype development, and field test efforts with the end goal of ensuring robust and superior positioning, navigation, and timing to the warfighter. In 2008, he will take on new responsibilities directing the Navigation Systems Group within MITRE' s Command and Control Center. John Studenny Aviation GPS Product Manager | Esterline CMC Electronics; Chairman of WG-2, SC-15 | Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) M. Meghan Miller President | UNAVCO UNAVCO supports and promotes scholarly research and public education on geodesy and its application to geosciences, providing engineering, data and educational services to a university and international agency consortium. Building on our legacy of solid earth deformation science, UNAVCO now actively supports GNSS studies of the cryosphere and atmosphere. Strategic activities in 2008± 2009 will include commissioning of Earthscope' s Plate Boundary Observatory, providing CGPS data for 1100 stations, integrated with borehole seismometer and strainmeter data; advancement of POLENET and GNET activities associated with the International Polar Year; atmospheric imaging and hurricane track improvement over the Caribbean, and support for GPS infrastructure in Africa through AREF . 46 GPS World | May 2008 ª The concept behind SBAS has not been fully exploited in aviation GNSS. I believe we have only scratched the surface with LPV CAT-I equivalent approach capability. With dual-frequency, additional satellites, integration with GALILEO and other GNSS systems, the use of the SBAS concept for military applications, not to mention civilian benefits, is the vision I would like to share with the entire GNSS community. I believe a dual-frequency GPS/ SBAS/GALILEO receiver should be capable of providing a CAT-II worldwide, and CAT-III is a possibility.º Guifei Jing Head of Navigation Division | National Remote Sensing Center of China ª In 2008/2009, I plan to do some research work on the establishment of integrated service system of systems for users in China. I hope we can help the domestic providers of digital map, regional and thematic service systems and service operators to sit together to discuss the possibility of setting up an interoperated system. º www.gpsworld.com http://www.gpsworld.com
